Rhode Island Air Fact Sheet

1. What air regulations does the state of Rhode Island follow?

  • The state of Rhode Island adheres to all federal emission standards for hazardous air pollutants (HAPs). National emission standards for HAPs, compliance dates and their rules and implementation are found in the following U.S. Environmental Protection Agency link :http://www.epa.gov/ttn/atw/eparules.html. Air Pollution Regulation No. 22: Air Toxics: was first promulgated by Rhode Island in 1988 and listed Acceptable Ambient Levels for forty substances. Those substances were selected as the stationary source non-criteria air pollutants that were most likely adversely impact public health, considering toxicity and the quantity of the pollutants emitted in the State. See: HAPs (Appendix) for minimum quantities http://www.dem.ri.gov/pubs/regs/regs/air/air09_08.pdf
