- The state of Kentucky adheres to all federal emission standards for hazardous air pollutants (HAPs). The state of Kentucky uses the federal HAPs list for inventory.
2. Which state organization manages air pollution regulations?
- Division of Air Quality: The Division of Air Quality is located in the Department for Environmental Protection and is part of the Energy and Environment Cabinet. The Division for Air Quality is the state agency primarily responsible for enforcing the state and federal air quality standards in the commonwealth of Kentucky with the goal of protecting public health and welfare. http://www.air.ky.gov/abouttheagency/
3. What are the specific responsibilities of the Division of Air Quality?
- Field Operations Branch: Inspect air emission sources; operate air quality monitors and enforce state and federal air quality regulations; http://www.air.ky.gov/homepage_repository/Division+for+Air+Quality+Branches.htm
- Field Support Section: Certify asbestos-abatement professionals; review schools' asbestos management plans; and review facilities' risk-management plans for hazardous chemicals;
- Permit Review Branch: Review applications from sources requiring permits to discharge pollutants into the ambient air in Kentucky and assist companies subject to state and/or federal air quality regulations by providing guidance during pre-application meetings;
- Technical Services Branch: Plan and support operation of the air monitoring network, maintain data acquisition network and observe and evaluate tests performed on air pollution sources to determine compliance with air emission standards
- Program, Planning and Administration Branch: Prepare the State Implementation Plan (SIP) to achieve and maintain national and state air quality standards; Draft and process air pollution control regulations; and measure trends in the reduction of emissions and improvement in air quality.
